Saving Money in the Laundry Room
March 12, 2008
For those of us who wash clothes in cold water to save energy, to save on electricity bills, or because our labels tell us to, Tide has formulated a coldwater laundry detergent washes clothes better than other detergents do in hot water. It seems their market research has told them that people want to save money by doing laundry in cold water, so they have responded and are marketing it as a money saver. Not to mention that clothes typically last longer washed cold. . It comes in powder (which contains a bleach ingredient), and liquid (which does not).
In a related thought, has anyone ever seen a laundromat washing machine that charges different amounts for cold and hot washes? :: Tide Coldwater

The Importance of Disinfecting Your Child’s Toys!
March 12, 2008
It is recommended that all toys be cleaned if they will be shared; however, baby and toddler toys need to be cleaned regularly each day. Younger children tend to place toys in their mouths, it is important that you wash the toy before allowing another infant to play with it.
There are some toys that you can just wash with soap and water; however, there are some toys that you should clean with bleach. To clean these toys with bleach you should use one gallon of water and around one or two teaspoons of bleach. Adding more bleach will mostly likely not get the toys any cleaner and is not recommended. It is extremely important that you rewash the toy and make sure that no bleach is left over. You can also use a bleach and water combination to clean areas around the house like the changing table. It is important that you remember not to mix any other chemicals with the bleach. Most chemicals are okay on their own; however, if you mix them toxic fumes can be produced.
To be completely honest, I was a little bit uneasy with cleaning my child’s toys with bleach. If you have this same feeling, another great way to disinfect toys is by placing harder surface toys in the dishwasher. If the toys are lightweight, you may want to think about tying them to the rack with twisty ties or something else.
Many plush stuffed animals can be cleaned right in the washer or dryer. Be careful when placing these items in the dryer, because some materials will react different than other. When I was little my mother washed a pair of plush monkey slippers and after she dried them, they were fuzzy and not furry anymore. There are some talking electronic toys that are not washer safe. These items will have to be surface washed by hand.

How to Get Your Child to Eat Vegetables
![]()
.![]()
Everyone knows that vegetables are good for you and many parents earnestly strive to ensure that their children eat them everyday–sometimes with little success. In light of this all-too-common challenge, parents often ask for tips to get their children to eat more vegetables.
A good attitude and a little creativity are key
Perhaps the most important factor to consider is your own attitude and approach toward eating in general. Avoid forcing your child to eat vegetables–or any other food for that matter. Encourage your child to try a spoonful, but don’t get upset if she refuses it. Eventually, she will try it, so keep reintroducing various foods from time to time. And remember that even young children can learn why nutrition is important; you can simply say: “They taste good and make you healthy, big, and strong.”
Some other tricks of the trade:
- Add vegetables to store-bought foods or to those you already prepare (some suggestions are listed in the next section).
- Set out a plate of raw vegetables or a salad of cold, cooked vegetables before the meal–the time when your child is hungriest.
- Keep a bowl of cherry tomatoes or baby carrots in the refrigerator for a quick and handy snack. (Of course, you’ll want to take into account the fact that these foods can be potential choking hazards for toddlers and preschoolers.)
- Serve raw or lightly steamed vegetables with salad dressing or cheese sauce for dipping.
- Make mashed sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes, since sweet potatoes contain lots of vitamin A.
- Let your child make her own taco with shredded lettuce, tomato, ground turkey and a little cheese.
- Serve foods with tomato sauce or stewed tomatoes often.
- Try not to overcook vegetables to preserve their taste, bright appearance, and valuable vitamins.
- Help make your child familiar with vegetables; serve them everyday.
- Prepare meals together (e.g., younger children can wash and older ones can chop vegetables for stir-fry dishes and salads).
- Let your child help choose fresh vegetables when you’re shopping.
- Plant a vegetable garden with your child or even just put a small cherry tomato plant in a pot in a sunny spot in the yard.
- Most important, set a good example. Remember that your actions will speak louder than words. Besides, parents need their veggies, too!
Helpful additions
If your child turns up his nose at a lot of vegetables, try slipping them into her food by:
- Making muffins with your child and adding pumpkin, zucchini, or shredded carrots to the muffin mix.
- Tucking in a lettuce leaf, a tomato slice, or carrot curls into sandwiches.
- Adding chopped spinach or a handful of frozen vegetables to soups, ramen noodles, spaghetti sauce, or lasagna.
- Adding chopped tomato or grated carrots to tuna, chicken, or pasta salads.
- Cooking frozen mixed vegetables according to the directions and then adding them to store-bought potato salad.
- Making pizza with your child and adding chopped broccoli or spinach to frozen pizza or frozen bread dough topped with tomato sauce.
- Adding chopped broccoli or extra carrots to canned or dried chicken soup.
Slow Drain Solutions!
March 11, 2008
Is your drain running a little slow?
Here’s a quick fix that’s inexpensive, easy on the planet and won’t harm your pipes or sink.
Simply pour 1/2 a cup of dry baking soda into the drain. Don’t worry if some of it sits on the outside of the drain opening. Then pour 1 cup of plain white vinegar into the drain. The fizzing action will clear minor clogs. Rinse with some boiling water. Repeat as often as necessary.
This solution really works but, if you have a stubborn clog or a lot of standing water, you’ll need a good chemical drain cleaner like Draino or Liquid Plumber.
